Why batik precuts?
Batiks are made with a wax-resist dye process, so every piece carries rich, saturated color and a mottled texture that reads beautifully in patchwork. A precut bundle takes the guesswork out of combining them: collection bundles come from one coordinated line, so the colors already play well together, while batik solid bundles give you a stack of one color for backgrounds and sashing.
Batik precuts are also a great way to try batiks for the first time. Because batiks are dyed through, they have almost no "wrong side," and their tight weave holds a crisp edge when you press seams and cut small pieces.
Which batik precut should I choose?
- Batik jelly rolls – 2.5" x width-of-fabric strips, perfect for strip quilts, bindings and quick lap quilts. Island Batik calls theirs Strips.
- Batik layer cakes – 10" squares for big-block quilts, half-square triangles and fast tops. You'll also see them called Stacks or 10" Squares.
- Batik charm packs – 5" squares for patchwork, table runners and scrappy blocks.
- Batik fat quarter bundles – 18" x 21" cuts that give you the most flexibility for fussy cutting and appliqué.

Batik precut FAQs
Do I need to prewash batik precuts?
No. Precuts shouldn't be prewashed because the small pieces can fray and shrink unevenly. Batiks are dyed through and usually colorfast, but a color catcher in the first wash of your finished quilt is a good safeguard.
What's the difference between a batik jelly roll and a batik layer cake?
A jelly roll is a set of 2.5" strips cut across the width of the fabric. A layer cake is a stack of 10" squares. Strips suit strip-pieced and log cabin designs, while 10" squares are ideal for big blocks and half-square triangles.
Why are Island Batik precuts called Strips and Stacks?
Each manufacturer uses its own names. Island Batik sells 2.5" strips as Strips and 10" squares as Stacks, and Artisan Batiks uses Roll Up and Ten Squares. A Stacks or Ten Squares bundle is the same size as a layer cake.
Can I mix batik precuts with regular quilting cotton?
Yes. Batiks are a tighter weave than most quilting cotton, but they sew and wash together without trouble. Many quilters pair a batik precut with a solid or tone-on-tone background.
How much yardage goes with a batik precut bundle?
It depends on the pattern, so check its fabric requirements for background, border, backing and binding. Batik yardage from the same line is the easiest way to get a perfect match.
