Why Buy Solids as Precuts?

Solids are the backbone of a quilt, whether they're the background behind busy prints or the whole palette in a modern design. Solid precuts come two ways. Single-color packs (all white, all black, all navy) give you background fabric already cut to size. Color story packs give you a coordinated range of shades for gradient, rainbow and modern quilts.

Which Solid Precut Should I Choose?

  • 2.5" strips (Roll Ups, Strips) – sashing, borders, binding and strip quilts.
  • 10" squares (Ten Squares, Tiles, Stacks) – half-square triangles and big modern blocks.
  • 5" squares (charm packs, Chips, Stamps) – background squares and color-block patchwork.
  • 1.5" strips (Skinny Strips, Micro Strips) and 2.5" squares (mini charms) – sashing, piano keys and tiny blocks.
  • Fat quarter bundles – the most flexible cut for picking a palette.

The Solid Lines You'll Find Here

Kona Cotton from Robert Kaufman is the best-known quilting solid, with precuts in white, snow, black, navy, red and many color palettes. Colorworks Premium Solids from Northcott come as Strips, Chips and Tiles. Batik solids from Island Batik give a hand-dyed, mottled look as Strips, Stamps and Stacks. You'll also find FreeSpirit Designer Essential Solids and American Made Brand solids from Clothworks.

Why Do the Names Change?

"Jelly roll", "layer cake" and "charm pack" started with Moda. Robert Kaufman calls theirs Roll Ups and Ten Squares, Northcott uses Strips, Chips and Tiles, and Island Batik uses Strips, Stamps and Stacks. The size is always on the label.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most popular solid for quilt backgrounds?+

White and snow (a softer, off-white) are the most popular. Kona Cotton White and Snow Roll Ups and Ten Squares are among our best-selling precuts because they save you cutting background pieces.

What's the difference between Kona and Colorworks solids?+

Both are high-quality quilting cotton solids. Kona Cotton is made by Robert Kaufman and Colorworks Premium Solids by Northcott. Colors from different brands won't match exactly, so stick to one line when shades need to match.

What is a color story precut?+

A color story (or palette) pack groups a range of solid shades that work together, like pastels, jewel tones or a single color family. It's an easy way to get a coordinated palette without picking every fabric yourself.

Are batik solids the same as regular solids?+

Not quite. Batik solids are hand-dyed, so they have gentle color variation and a tighter weave. They read as solid from a distance but add texture up close.

How many solid precuts do I need for a background?+

It depends on your pattern. Many charm pack and layer cake patterns pair one print precut with one matching solid precut for the background. Check your pattern's supply list.
