Established in 1983, Aurifil is an accomplished Italian company based near Milano, with a full-grown experience in producing superior quality cotton threads for professional and domestic quilters. Aurifil threads are made from Long Staple Egyptian Mako cotton.
The 50 weight Mako cotton thread is the most popular and versatile thread. It is ideal for hand piecing and hand appliqué especially when using the needle turn method. It also perfect for machine appliqué when you want the fabric to be the feature rather than the thread - the thread looks like it "melts" into the fabric, use straight, small zig zag, and blanket stitches. Use for very detailed machine quilting with a lot of backtracking such as feathers and heavy background quilting . Perfect for quilting that creates texture when you don’t necessarily want to see the quilting lines. Use an 80/12 Sharp/Microtex, denim or top stitching needle for best results.

I love this line of threads! I have used it for over ten years and have purchased many of the colors. I appreciate the large amount on each spool and the fact that it can be used across a variety of projects! I would bet that I have gone through at least five spools of the ecru color through the years with black coming in second.

I make a lot of quilts for cancer and Seattle Children's Hospital. I use Hoffman's Raven batik solid for the mini-border and the binding. I use Aurifil 50wt black for the top stitching. I love Aurifil for longarm quilting and the bindings. I use a herringbone stitch for the bindings.

My first name is MARY ELLEN, not Mary. I love Aurifil Thread. It's the only kind I use. I needed black, so I bought it. Aurifil Thread has almost no lint.

I always need black thread on hand. I like black binding and borders in my scrappy quilts. I think it's great.

Well worth it!

It took me a little while to "upgrade" to this premium thread, but wow, is it worth it! My (mid-level) machine has balked against some of the cheaper stuff, which winds poorly on the bobbin or breaks with just a test swatch; it LOVES the smooth, even performance of this Aurifil, and the very full spool lasts quite a long time. Will continue to replenish as necessary, and also hope to expand my stash.
