Description:

Birds in the Woods sets flying-geese units into six vertical columns, leaving open spaces for five appliqued birds. Each column uses a different fabric combination, and narrow white strips separate the columns. The birds face in different directions, with templates supplied for their bodies, wings, tails and beaks. This beginner project features Woodland fabrics and finishes at 59 by 63 inches, combining stitch-and-flip piecing with fused, stitched applique and a separate binding.

Birds in the Woods Free Quilt Pattern by Natalie Crabtree quilt pattern summary

  1. Trace the bird templates onto fusible web in the two indicated orientations. Cut the fabric rectangles and squares, keeping the directional prints organized for their columns.
  2. Use stitch-and-flip construction to make the flying-geese units in six color combinations. Check the fabric direction against the layout before completing each group.
  3. Arrange and sew the vertical columns with their plain spaces, then join them with the white sashing strips. Use the alignment method in the pattern to match the columns.
  4. Position the birds in the open spaces, fuse them and stitch around the shapes. Layer, baste and quilt the top, then finish with I binding.
