Description:

Butterflies in Bloom by Chloe Anderson and Colleen Reale of Toadusew is an intermediate quilt featuring the Papillon collection. Four fussy-cut butterfly squares form the center, with coordinating squares appearing as cornerstones farther out. Multiple borders combine narrow strips, half-square-triangle blocks and wider printed bands around this center. The finished quilt measures 53 inches square. Cutting and pressing directions help preserve the orientation of the striped fabrics, while the instructions also cover layering, quilting and traditional binding.

Butterflies in Bloom Free Quilt Pattern by Chloe Anderson & Colleen Reale quilt pattern summary

  1. Cut the fabrics in the listed order and fussy cut the butterfly squares if matching the illustrated version. Join the center squares with sashing and its surrounding strips.
  2. Make the half-square-triangle units with the stripes oriented as shown. Combine these with the small square-and-rectangle units to form the three block variations and the pieced borders.
  3. Sew the strip-pieced borders and add the corner squares. Attach all borders to the center in the listed sequence, adding the side pieces before the top and bottom pieces.
  4. Prepare and baste the quilt sandwich, test the quilting stitches and quilt from the center outward. Trim, attach the joined binding strips and sew the binding to the back.
