Chestnut Orchard Free Quilt Pattern by Wendy Sheppard
Chestnut Orchard combines thirty nine-patch blocks in a 79-by-92-inch quilt designed by Wendy Sheppard. The intermediate project features Mary Koval’s Bedford collection and builds each larger block from contrasting light and dark circle units made with corner triangles. Sashing and cornerstones separate the blocks in six rows. An inner border leads to a fussy-cut striped outer border, whose mitered corners are included in the assembly directions.

- Sew corner triangles onto the squares to make light and dark circle units. Arrange the units into nine-patch blocks and repeat in the specified fabrics for thirty blocks.
- Join five blocks and their sashing into each of six rows. Assemble the cornerstone sashing rows and alternate them with the block rows.
- Attach the inner border, then center and sew the outer-border strips, leaving the seam ends free for mitering. Miter and trim the corners.
- Layer the quilt top with batting and backing, baste and quilt as desired. Bind with the Fabric M strips.
