Description:

Elegant Wings frames fussy-cut fabric motifs with pieced sides and corners made from half-square triangles and small squares. Twenty blocks are arranged with sashing, keeping the five center motifs in a planned sequence before an outer border encloses the top. Stacey Day designed the advanced-beginner quilt with Nocturnal Creatures fabrics by Maria Matos. The project finishes at 81 1/2 by 99 inches and uses sixteen-inch finished blocks, with a labeled layout for the individual motifs.

  1. Fussy cut the twenty center squares and label the remaining pieces. Sew and cut the paired squares to make the half-square triangles, then trim them to size.
  2. Make the cornered-square and triangle units, then combine them into block sides and corners. Sew these around each motif square to complete twenty blocks.
  3. Sort the blocks by center motif and arrange them with sashing in the order shown. Join the rows and add the outer border.
  4. Prepare the binding and backing, layer and quilt the top, then trim the extra layers and complete the binding by hand or machine.
