Hummingbird alternates pieced star blocks with appliqued arrangements of birds, flowers, leaves and vine rings. Wendy Sheppard’s design features the Romance collection and finishes at 94 inches square. Each pieced block combines five small stars with four plain squares, while the applique blocks use the included shapes and a circular placement guide. Five rows form the center, followed by two narrow borders and a wider printed border that frames the quilt.

- Cut the star patches, background squares and border strips, then prepare the applique shapes and vine rings.
- Piece the flying-geese star units and combine them with plain squares in the nine-patch block arrangement.

- Alternate the pieced and applique blocks in five rows, add the three borders, then layer, quilt and bind.
