Lava Lamps Free Quilt Pattern by Lisa Swenson Ruble
Lava Lamps arranges pieced triangle blocks in six rows, with three surrounding borders completing the design. The blocks are made by sewing paired squares, cutting them apart and joining the resulting units again to create the crossed diagonal seams. Five print combinations repeat across the center, with block orientation changing to follow the layout. Lisa Swenson Ruble designed this advanced-beginner project using BioGeo Energy by Adrienne Leban, and the finished quilt measures 62 by 71 inches.

Lava Lamps Free Quilt Pattern by Lisa Swenson Ruble quilt pattern summary
- Cut the large squares and the three sets of border strips, reserving the binding strips separately. Mark the background squares for diagonal sewing.
- Sew paired squares on both sides of the marked line and cut them apart. Pair the resulting units again, mark a perpendicular diagonal, sew and cut to complete the blocks.
- Repeat for the five fabric combinations and arrange the blocks in six rows of five. Join the rows, nesting their seam allowances.
- Measure the quilt center, prepare the border lengths and attach the three borders in order. Layer, quilt and bind the completed top.
