Quilters Select Free Fuse: Flat, Pin-Free Layers for Quilt Basting

Reviewers describe it as a clean alternative to pins and spray basting, and many say it has become a regular part of their quilting routine.

What it's like to use

Customers say Free Fuse sprinkles on like salt and stays where you put it. One reviewer noted that a little goes a long way, and another described the feel of the process simply: no puckers, no unwanted tucks, just easy holding of backing, batting and top together. Many buyers report no fumes and no overspray, so the workspace stays tidy. Several also say it doesn't gum up my needle, which keeps machine quilting moving.

Who it suits

Reviewers describe Free Fuse as a good fit for free-motion and machine quilting, especially for those who want to skip pin basting. It works for smaller pieces too: one reviewer used it on a wall hanging and found it easy to work in stages on an ironing board. Others have used it for baby quilts, a twin-size quilt, and a 63"×63" quilt.

Why quilters reach for it

Reviewers describe a cleaner, calmer basting process. Customers say it is a big help when free-motion quilting, and many report it is far less messy than spray basting.

Most people ask about

How does Free Fuse hold quilt layers together?

Customers say it can take the place of pin-basting, and one reviewer described holding backing, batting and top together with no puckers or unwanted tucks. Reviewers describe it as a way to fuse layers before free-motion quilting. Some note that fusing takes a while and needs a fair amount of steam.

Is Free Fuse messy, and does it leave a smell or residue?

Reviewers say it fuses without residue or odor and that it has no smell or fumes. Several describe it as much less messy than spray basting, and one says it doesn't gum up the sewing machine needle. Many buyers find it a clean alternative to spray products.

Can Free Fuse be used for machine quilting on a home sewing machine?

One reviewer said a twin-size quilt held together beautifully for machine quilting on a home machine. Another used it to fuse layers for free-motion quilting and found the results good. Customers say it works for both machine and hand quilting.

What projects have people made with Free Fuse?

Reviewers describe using it on baby quilts, twin-size and larger quilts, and wall hangings. Others have used it for table runners, potholders, trivets and hot pads, and pillow tops glued to batting and muslin. Customers say it suits both smaller items and full-size quilts.

How do reviewers apply Free Fuse?

Reviewers describe sprinkling it on like salt, and it stays where it is placed. One reviewer found that applying it in lines was more efficient than lightly coating the entire backing. Others said they worked in stages on an ironing board, which was not a problem.

Just what I needed

When quilting smaller items, getting flat layers has always been a challenge. I pin or spray and it is either too messy or not the result I hoped for. Free Fuse sprinkles on like salt and stays where you put it. I needed to work in stages to fit my project on my ironing board but that was not a problem. I did both machine (boarders) and hand quilting (outlining) on this wall hanging and I was pleased at how they both turned out! I will definitely use this again.

Great

I love it. It has made my machine quilting look so much better. I have only used it on baby quilts but I am going to try it on a lap size quilt this week.

Best. Thing. Ever!

Absolutely amazing!! Easy to use and a little goes a long way. I use this to make zipper pouches, project bags, fabric ornaments and everything else in between. Will definitely be getting more when it runs out!! Yes, it’s slightly pricey but it works better than anything I’ve used. There’s no fumes and and you can control exactly where it goes.

Free Fuse

Disappointed. I was excited to order and receive the Free Fuse. I used it after watching the video on YouTube a couple of times. It does bond, but it left "salt dust" everywhere. It leached thru the fabric so I was constantly covered in it everytime I handled my quilt. I did not use a lot. In fact, I used it very sparingly. I'm going back to spray basting. 1st time I've been disappointed by anything from Missouri Star. I'm a huge fan and love the tutorials. It's just this particular product....
