Description:

Stairway to the Stars by Audrie Bidwell combines thirteen X blocks and twelve Y blocks in a five-by-five arrangement. Butter Pecan fabrics supply the light, dark and yellow groups used throughout the design. The X blocks pair four-patch units with larger light squares, while the Y blocks combine smaller four-patches, a contrasting center and template-cut points. The blocks finish at twelve inches, and the complete quilt is listed at sixty and a half inches square.

Stairway to the Stars Free Quilt Pattern by Audrie Bidwell quilt pattern summary

  1. Separate the fabrics into the light, dark and yellow groups. Cut the strips and squares from the fabric chart and prepare the left and right triangle pieces with the supplied templates.
  2. Sew the wider light and dark strips together, subcut them and make four-patch units. Combine the units with the larger light squares to assemble the thirteen X blocks.
  3. Make the smaller corner four-patches and the yellow-and-dark center units for the Y blocks. Add the paired template triangles to the light squares and assemble twelve Y blocks.
  4. Arrange the X and Y blocks in the five-by-five grid, following the labeled fabric placement. Join the blocks in rows and assemble the rows according to the quilt layout.
